Can Multiple System Atrophy improve with acupuncture?

Multiple System Atrophy is said to make walking difficult within about five years of onset, but the progression varies greatly between individuals.

Do You Have These Symptoms?
Early-stage autonomic nervous system abnormalities can accelerate the progression of Multiple System Atrophy. If you lose the ability to produce a deep voice, symptoms can worsen suddenly. Additionally, if you experience difficulty walking or staggering after a fracture or surgery under general anesthesia, these could be signs of worsening symptoms, so please be cautious.

Is Acupuncture Effective for Multiple System Atrophy?

Our Treatment Policy

Multiple System Atrophy can generally be divided into two phases: an early stage where walking and speech become unstable, and a later stage where patients may become bedridden. As of December 30, 2024, new drugs under development aim to slow symptom progression. At our clinic, we focus on "extending the early stage as much as possible and maintaining the body's condition during this period," and we approach acupuncture treatment for Multiple System Atrophy with this in mind.

Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction

When autonomic nervous system dysfunction becomes apparent, the progression of Multiple System Atrophy tends to accelerate. Since autonomic nerve disorders manifest in abnormal body temperatures, we use medical thermography to observe temperature changes during treatment. Acupuncture is often effective for autonomic nervous dysfunction.

Cerebellar Ataxia

As cerebellar ataxia progresses, balance is affected, making walking difficult. Stimulating the responsible muscles with acupuncture immediately followed by rehabilitation is often effective for cerebellar ataxia.

In Multiple System Atrophy, limbs can become stiff and cold, and freezing of gait may occur. Applying acupuncture techniques used for Parkinson’s disease often helps improve freezing of gait.

- Examining the State of the Autonomic Nervous System
  
  In Multiple System Atrophy, the balance of the autonomic nervous system often deteriorates before symptoms worsen. Disorders in the autonomic nervous system manifest as changes in surface body temperature. We monitor body temperature to detect early signs of deterioration and proceed with acupuncture treatment accordingly.
- Examining Body Posture and Tilt
  
  In the cerebellar degeneration type of Multiple System Atrophy, the more the body tilts, the faster the symptoms tend to progress. We examine the degree of tilt and identify postural muscles causing the tilt, then proceed with acupuncture treatment to address the underlying issues.
- Examining Blood Flow to the Brain
  
  Patients with rapid progression of Multiple System Atrophy often experience poor blood flow to the brain. Since blood flow differs between lying down and upright positions, we examine brain blood flow in the most common daily posture and proceed with acupuncture treatment accordingly.
- Stimulating Acupuncture Points Based on Examination Results
  
  We stimulate specific acupuncture points based on examination results, enabling more effective acupuncture treatment for recovery from Multiple System Atrophy.

About Treatment Sessions

We perform treatments and examinations over a course of 14 sessions.
It is possible to undergo multiple treatments in one day.
Afterward, we conduct examinations to determine the appropriate treatment intervals.

Examination Fees

We examine abnormalities in autonomic balance, muscle tension, body tilt, and blood flow to the brain.
The initial examination fee is approximately 15,000 yen.
